Good start on Season 2. Glad to see you guys back. “This Guy” is getting big.
Glad you covered this topic. I’ve been curious, but considering my area is not amenable to a 3G reliance, I’ve been on the fence. Useful info. I think I’ll pass. 😉

Comment on June 23, 2011 04:47 pmGreat episode, but have thought of just getting a prepaid smartphone? That would make your set up much simpler. I mean from Virgin mobile you can get a pre-paid android phone and use it to tether your ipod touch if necessary without rooting. Just download the app “quick settings” and enable the wifi tethering featuer built into android 2.2. That way you can do everything you want to do on your ipod and still have reliable voice calls for….wait for it…$25 a month. It all works on the Sprint Network so your experience should be the same you had before.
I hope this solution gives you a higher P.A.R rating and by selling the Mifi you can recoup much of the up front cost.
Love the show
PS Here a video about the setup i described above

Comment on June 23, 2011 06:35 pmAt the time I started the experiment, there weren’t any high-quality prepaid Android devices out there. Better phones are coming now, so, that’s definitely an easier solution.
Comment on June 24, 2011 04:12 pmThanks for doing the leg work on this experiment. I considered doing it myself but when I realized the cost would be the same I decided against it. I’m on a Verizon family plan and I’m the secondary line, so I pay $10/mo for voice and $30/mo for unlimited 3g (get it while it’s hot!). I don’t need a texting package because, like Iyaz, all my calls/texts are piped through Google Voice.
Good episode, can’t wait to see what’s coming up.
