This show is just an outrageously well produced, informative, yet entertaining find. I have tried nerd/tech casts galore but could not find one I enjoyed. I happen to have set up a media network using a Stora unit earlier this year. I wish I had known about the Drobo then as the extra slots would come in handy. I was just beginning to review options for boxtops so I can move away from using my Xbox 360 when I discovered This Old Nerd. Perhaps I will learn something about the 360 as a front end I’m unaware of… I’m looking forward to more.

Wow. That’s very nice of you to write. Thanks, we really appreciate the compliments. The 360 ep is coming either tomorrow or Friday. Hang tight.

Hope you guys had a Great Holiday!

I finally got to show off all the work I’ve been doing by building a media servers, cat 6 in the walls, you name it….. and I can say” I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD” It all worked PERFECT! Plus, the bandwidth Gods we’re there as well.
Everyone knows when you have company over & you want to showoff something you’ve built it never works, so you go to the excuse list & people will hang in there about 10 mins watching you try to show them this “it’s so cool” it’s so easy, thing you’ve been talking about for 30 mins but it just doesn’t work! Finally after an hour & a half your wife walks by & says “CAN YOU JUST STOP IT…..LEAVE IT ALONE….WHO CARES” BUT NOT THIS YEAR!!!!!

My Friends, Family & even Long Distance Family always have known I was a Super NERD, but this year as they’re driving back home for hours….they’ll be thinking…..WOW…..that’s some High-Tech, Cool Stuff….Jason’s was showing us!

What’s your favorite hang on one sec….excuse you always give?

I try not to show off anything that doesn’t work 100% of the time. My go to excuse is “Dang. Never mind.”

Can’t wait for the Roku to network to media files. Iyaz will you be reviewing that capability?

Comment on December 5, 2010 12:48 am

Great idea. I might just try that out. Thanks, David!

David,
You might want to check out the Roku HD Frontend project:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/ROKU_HD_Frontend
It’s aimed at the MythTV user, but it works just well with any H.264 video with AAC audio (IIRC).

I’m in the process of getting rid of cable and going over-the-air (hope to buy a dual-tuner Silicon Dust tuner in January – from the ThisOldNerd store of course). Now that Netflix has the Disney shows my daughters (9 and 4) watch, and the OTA will let me get the PBS shows the wife watches, I can use the Roku to provide a single set-top-box for all.

Iayz – If your PAR for the Roku was high before, imagine what it will be with the Roku Frontend software setup! 😉

Dan, that’s really great. Are there any tips you could share about using the Roku HD Frontend project?

The “everyman” reviews are what really sells me on your show. Trying to find someone who will just show what things do instead of reading a spec sheet makes me come back every week for my This Old Nerd fix.

Keep up the good work sir!

Thanks, I really enjoy doing the show and it’s great to hear positive feedback.

Thanks! I’m not a fan of how things should “theoretically” work. I think as nerds/geeks we accept that a lot more than most normal folks.

Love the show! I actually discovered this show from your entertaining appearances on Tech News Today. Anyways, the Roku box actually does have some secret/private channels that allow home server streaming and to activate the usb port. But you might want to consider these beta channels made by independent developers. But there are 3 mymedia, roksbox, and an open source server which I believe is no longer maintained. You can find links to these channels pretty easily through google or the roku forums. It will be nice to see what is added after this upcoming firmware upgrade. And perhaps you can do another roku mini episode if you get these working. Looking forward to more of your excellent work!

Thanks for following me from “Tech News Today.” I always have a great time on that show.

Secret channels, huh? I wasn’t aware of those — I’ll have to look into those items. If I find anything, expect an episode on that. Thanks for watching and the info!
